Argentina's Trade Surplus Continues in December

Argentina recorded a trade surplus of $1,666 million in December 2024, marking 13 consecutive months of positive balance. Exports increased by 33.4% compared to the same month last year, while imports decreased by 17.5% annually.

In December, the trade balance maintained a surplus of USD 1,666 million, thus prolonging 13 consecutive months of positive balances. During the whole year 2024, the Argentine trade surplus rose to USD 18,899 million, according to official data provided by Indec this Monday.

In terms of exports, during the last month of the previous year, there was a 33.4% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. In seasonally adjusted and trend-cycle terms, growths of 0.6% and 0.1%, respectively, were reported compared to the previous month.

Regarding imports, these recorded a year-on-year surge of 26.2% in December 2024. Total imports during the 12 months of that year reached USD 60,822 million, which represented a decrease of 17.5% compared to the previous year. Freight from strategic areas such as China, USMCA, the European Union, and Mercosur together accounted for 78.5% of the total imported.

Exports, on the other hand, experienced an increase of 19.4% throughout 2024, reaching a total value of USD 79,721 million. In particular, the growth of 91.9% in imports from China compared to the same month of the previous year stands out. In December, Mercosur-origin freight rose to account for 20.1%, with an increase in its unit value of 70.4% compared to the same month of 2023.

The positive evolution of the Argentine trade balance in December reflects an encouraging outlook in terms of foreign trade exchange, with a surplus that remains stable and the strengthening of exports, aspects that drive the economy of the country.
