The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, described the agreement reached in a meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei in Washington as "excellent," prior to Donald Trump's assumption as President of the United States. Georgieva announced the arrival of an IMF mission to Buenos Aires next week to follow up on the country's economic program.
During the meeting, Georgieva praised Argentina's progress in reducing inflation, stabilizing its economy, and economic growth. She emphasized that the IMF approved the assessment of Argentina's extraordinary program earlier this year, recognizing the economic policies implemented. This backing is considered significant support for Milei's administration.
Milei was accompanied by Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, and Chancellor Gerardo Werthein in the meeting with Georgieva. The situation of the agreement between Argentina and the IMF was discussed in the context of Trump's arrival to the presidency and its influence on the multilateral organization. Georgieva highlighted Argentina's tremendous economic progress and announced that the population will soon begin to notice the benefits, with a reduction in poverty.
The IMF mission visiting Argentina aims to work on a new program to make the country more dynamic and prosperous. In its latest report, the IMF requested the Casa Rosada a plan to eliminate the exchange rate controls, warning about potential obstacles caused by foreign exchange controls and the appreciation of the real exchange rate.
