Government Intervenes in Port of Ushuaia Over Irregularities

The national government has ordered the administrative intervention of the port infrastructure of the Port of Ushuaia for a period of 12 months due to financial irregularities and infrastructure failures. The measure was officially made this Thursday through Resolution 4/2026 of the National Ports and Navigation Agency, published in the Official Gazette. According to information obtained by the Argentine News Agency, the measure aims to regularize the operational safety conditions and address the investment deficit detected at the terminal. The national body justified its decision after verifying that the province of Tierra del Fuego used the port's financial surplus to fund the state social work (OSEF) through Provincial Law No. 1596, which violates the transfer agreement that requires reinvesting income exclusively in port activities. Likewise, a technical inspection carried out in 2025 detected structural deterioration in the docks, obsolete fire-fighting systems, and an infrastructure project execution level of only 1.3% of the provincial entity's total expenditure. The resolution also establishes the suspension of the port's authorization for one year, although the enforcement of this specific sanction is deferred to avoid interrupting the current 2025-2026 cruise season and not affecting the region's supply. However, the administrative intervention over machinery, facilities, and fund management is effective immediately. For the management of the intervention, the ANPyN has requested technical and resource collaboration from the General Ports Administration (AGP S.A.U.).
