Malargüe: From Potential to Reality

Governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejo, used the 75th anniversary of the department's second founding to send a clear message: Malargüe is no longer a promise but has solidified itself as the core of Mendoza's new productive matrix, with mining and energy as central vectors, backed by a package of public works and investments that the governor himself described as 'unprecedented in history.' The event, held at the Malal Hue venue filled with entrepreneurs, chamber leaders, local authorities — including Vice Governor Hebe Casado — and national representatives, began after 1 p.m. and opened with a series of speeches around 2 p.m. The president of the Malargüe Chamber of Commerce, Gabriel Ginart, spoke first, but his intervention took on a new dimension at the end of the day, serving as a summary of the business climate. He proposed marking the anniversary with 'concrete proposals and a future vision,' and defended the need to articulate the private sector, the state, and the community for sustainable development. In this context, the province finances three-quarters of the project through a non-repayable grant, with an explicit goal: to create a common space for mining, oil, agribusiness, tourism, and the knowledge economy, prepared to receive investments. To this hub, 'essential' works for urban growth were added: water networks, electrical transformers, and gas expansion for various neighborhoods and subdivisions, with provincial contributions collectively exceeding historical amounts allocated to basic services in Malargüe. The governor highlighted that healthcare in Malargüe has, for the first time, reached the same standards as the rest of the province, defining the advances as a historic fact. He emphasized the expansion of the Mental Health service with more professionals and permanent on-call staff, as well as the incorporation of in-house technology mammograms, digitalized X-rays, and expanded ultrasound services. The digitization of clinical records in the hospital and most health centers in the department has moved from an objective to a concrete reality. The governor also highlighted the creation of a specialized dentistry service for people with disabilities as an example of public investment aimed at historically marginalized groups. The closing of the speech returned to the initial political thread, condensed into a definition that served as a message to the business audience gathered at Malal Hue.
