Man run over and shot 'by mistake' dies in hospital

Buenos Aires, Jan 21 (NA) – Paolo de la Fuente, the man who was run over and shot in the province of Córdoba by 'mistake', died early Wednesday after several days of agony in the hospital. It is believed that the accused, who is under arrest, confused the victim with another person in a case of settling scores. The attack took place the night of January 7 when Paolo was returning from playing soccer with friends in the Fénix neighborhood and was unexpectedly run over and dragged for several meters by a Volkswagen Vento car. At that moment, the driver got out and shot him 15 times in the leg, for which he had to be hospitalized in serious condition at the San Antonio de Padua Hospital in Río Cuarto. He was in an induced coma, had one of his legs amputated, and despite medical efforts, he died on Wednesday. Prosecutor Pablo Jávega was in charge of the investigation until January 15, when he went on recess, so the case is now in the hands of the Río Cuarto Fiscal Unit. After the judicial break, prosecutor Javier Di Santo will take over permanently. Sources in the case confirmed to the Argentine News Agency that after several days of investigation, a suspect was arrested and interrogated. The main hypothesis in the investigation is that the 26-year-old detainee may have confused the victim in a settling of scores case, so the attack was a mistake. Although the case is now in the hands of another prosecutor, the accused has been charged with the crime of qualified homicide in the degree of attempted. This qualification will be modified in the coming hours due to the victim's death.
