Death of Hugo Villaverde, Football Legend

Hugo Villaverde, a legend of Club Atlético Independiente, passed away at the age of 70. The former defender began his career at Colón de Santa Fe, playing 57 matches between 1973 and 1975 before joining Independiente in 1976, where he played 412 matches until his retirement in 1989. During his time at 'El Rojo,' Villaverde achieved significant success, including winning the National Tournament in 1977 and 1978, the Metropolitano in 1983, and the Primera División tournament in the 1988/89 season.

Internationally, Villaverde was part of the teams that won the Inter-American Cup in 1976, the Copa Libertadores in 1984, and the Intercontinental Cup the same year, defeating England's Liverpool 1-0. Colón de Santa Fe also mourned his passing, remembering him as a prominent figure of the 1970s and part of a memorable defense.

Despite being considered one of the best defenders in the history of Argentine football, Villaverde had few opportunities with the National Team. He made his debut in 1979 in a match against Bulgaria and played his last game representing Argentina in 1980 against Ireland at River Plate Stadium.

The news of Hugo Villaverde's passing was confirmed by Independiente through a statement on their social media, where he was described as a symbol, an idol for entire generations, and an exquisite central defender. The club highlighted his legacy both on and off the field and sent condolences to his loved ones.
