Racing is the new finalist of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, having defeated Corinthians 2-1 at home in a match held tonight at the "Cilindro" in Avellaneda, in the return leg of the semifinal of the cup.
The "Timao" started stronger, demonstrating this from the first minute when a through pass from Argentine midfielder Rodrigo Garro set up forward Memphis Depay. Five minutes later, the Brazilian team took the lead with a goal from Yuri Alberto.
Racing played hurriedly, with high lines that left spaces behind them. Despite having five defenders, they could not cover those spaces. At 33 minutes, Juan Fernando Quintero converted a penalty to equalize the match. Then, at 34 minutes, Quintero scored again to turn the result around.
With the help of the ball boy, Maximiliano Salas managed a quick throw-in that ended in Quintero's second goal. Racing won 2-1 over Corinthians and qualified for the final of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, where they will face Cruzeiro from Brazil.
In a second half more fought than played, Racing maintained their lead. Gustavo Costas' team thus reached an international final after 32 years. They will now have the opportunity to seek the title against Cruzeiro, a rival they could not defeat in the last international final they played in 1992.
The match was officiated by referee Felipe González (Chile) and the VAR was managed by Rodrigo Carvajal (Chile). The starting line-ups were: Corinthians with Hugo Nogueira; Mateuzinho, André Ramalho, Félix Torres, Matheus Bidu; André Carrillo, José Martínez, Charles; Rodrigo Garro; Yuri Alberto and Memphis Depay. Racing lined up with Gabriel Arias; Gastón Martirena, Marco Di Cesare, Santiago Sosa, Agustín García Basso, Gabriel Rojas; Juan Quintero, Juan Nardoni, Agustín Almendra, Maximiliano Salas; Adrián Martínez.
