The Argentine defender of Racing Club de Lens in France, Facundo Medina, has been called up by coach Lionel Scaloni to replace the injured Lisandro Martínez for the double matchday of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
On the eve of the start of matchday 11 of the South American Qualifiers, where Argentina will face Paraguay in Asunción, coach Lionel Scaloni suffered the losses of defenders Germán Pezzella and Lisandro Martínez, as well as forward Nicolás González this weekend, and is racing against time to summon their replacements.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed that Facundo Medina from Racing Club de Lens is the replacement for the Manchester United defender and is already on his way to Buenos Aires to join the training sessions.
Having come through River but with a first division stint at Talleres de Córdoba, the Villa Fiorito native made his debut for the Argentine National Team in a victory against Bolivia in La Paz during the second matchday of the South American Qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. He then had a few minutes in the 3-0 thrashing of Uruguay in Buenos Aires during the fifth matchday of the same qualifying process.
His last appearance in the light blue and white jersey was in the 2-0 victory over Indonesia during the international tour in June 2023.
