The River Plate team began last week the semifinal series of the Copa Libertadores against Atlético Mineiro with a loss in Brazil. Now, they will seek revenge this Tuesday in what will be Marcelo Gallardo's sixth participation in this stage of the tournament.
River is the only Argentine team still in the competition, having surpassed Talleres in the Round of 16 and Jorge Almirón's Colo Colo in the quarterfinals. The Argentine team needs a historic comeback against Atlético Mineiro, which won 3-0 in the first match held in Belo Horizonte.
This is the sixth time that River, under Gallardo's direction, has reached the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores, having won three series and lost two to date.
In 2015, River became the champion of the Copa Libertadores after defeating Guaraní in the semifinals. In 2017, they lost to Lanús, while in 2018 they were crowned champions again by overcoming Grêmio. In 2019, they won the series against Boca but were runners-up, and in 2020, they were eliminated by Palmeiras.
This Tuesday, River Plate will face Atlético Mineiro in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals, with the mission of overcoming the 3-0 deficit.
