The Argentine national team remains in first place in the FIFA ranking, with 1,883.5 points, following the announcement of the ranking this Thursday. France and Spain complete the podium in second and third place, respectively.
This is the eighteenth time Argentina has led the ranking since May 2023, when it overtook Brazil. Other South American teams in the top 100 include Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, and Colombia. Meanwhile, Uruguay has dropped three positions and is now in 14th place, Ecuador is in 27th, Peru in 38th, Venezuela in 44th, Chile in 53rd, Paraguay in 55th, and Bolivia in 79th place.
The FIFA ranking is calculated using a model called “SUM,” which adds or subtracts points gained or lost in a match from the total points accumulated up to that moment. It takes into account the relative strength of the contenders and the expectation that better-ranked teams are more likely to win against lower-ranked teams.
The Argentine national team, under the direction of Lionel Scaloni, remains at the top of the ranking after drawing with Venezuela and beating Bolivia in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, with a standout performance by Lionel Messi. France, the world runner-up, is in second place, followed by Spain, the European Championship champion. The teams of England, Brazil, and Belgium occupy the fourth to sixth positions in the ranking.
