The eighteenth round of the Liga Profesional de Fútbol took place over the weekend with the main highlight being Huracán's approach to Vélez and its intention to compete for the title. The team led by Frank Kudelka achieved its second consecutive victory by defeating Unión 1-0 with a penalty from Héctor Fértoli. With this victory, Huracán placed itself just three points behind leader Vélez, who drew against River at El Monumental.
In the upcoming match, a decisive game is expected between Huracán and Vélez, where the Parque Patricios team will seek revenge for a controversial match that took place 15 years ago, in the 2009 Clausura, when Vélez defeated them 1-0, leaving the "Globo," then managed by Ángel Cappa, empty-handed after a series of controversies.
Below the leaders, with 31 points, is Talleres, which suffered a defeat against Argentinos Juniors, losing the opportunity to close in on the title race. Instituto and Racing, both with 28 points, as well as Unión and Deportivo Riestra, with 27, are lurking, waiting for any slip-up from the teams above.
Regarding the race for the tournament's top scorer title, Vélez's forward, Braian Romero, remains on top with 11 goals. He is followed by Jonathan Herrera from Deportivo Riestra with 9 goals, and Miguel Borja (River) and Milton Jiménez (Boca) with 8 each, respectively.
As for international tournaments, Estudiantes de La Plata is the only team guaranteed a spot in the Copa Libertadores due to its title in the Copa de la Liga in the first semester. In the annual table, the classified teams would be Vélez, Godoy Cruz, and Talleres. Meanwhile, for the Copa Sudamericana, River, Racing, Huracán, Boca, Argentinos, and Independiente are in qualifying spots. Teams like Unión, Instituto, and Lanús still have chances to enter these spots with a few points less.
