The match started unfavorably for Etcheverry, who quickly fell behind as the first set was 6-3 in favor of the Frenchman, who took the only chance he had, according to the Argentine News Agency. However, Etcheverry staged a great recovery by breaking his opponent's serve twice to win the second set 6-3.
