Buenos Aires, January 5 (NA) – A 55-year-old Russian mountaineer died after collapsing near the summit of Aconcagua in Mendoza province while climbing the mountain. The man was identified as Konstantin Bitiukov. He was at a place known as El Hombro, about 6,000 meters up, very close to the Aconcagua summit, but he reportedly suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest that caused him to faint. Immediately, the expedition guide requested assistance. According to a report from Diario Uno, accessed by the Argentine News Agency, the mountaineer was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 20 minutes and was administered oxygen and adrenaline to revive him, but he died. Meanwhile, personnel from the Mendoza Police Rescue Patrol, based in Aconcagua Provincial Park, activated an operation with Park Rangers and traveled by helicopter to the man's location. After the mountaineer's death was confirmed, the case was handed over to the Uspallata 23rd Police Station and is being investigated by prosecutor María Maturano of the Office of the Prosecutor No. 11.
