Argentines in Champions League: Álvarez Scores, Liverpool Loses

On Tuesday, the first matchday of the sixth round of the UEFA Champions League took place, featuring several Argentine football players. The most prominent among them was Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, who scored a goal. According to the Argentine News Agency, the River Plate academy product netted the equalizer at the 37th minute of the first half, making it 1-1 against PSV of the Netherlands. The Spanish side eventually secured a 3-2 victory. In addition to Álvarez, the 'Colchoneros' lineup also included Nahuel Molina, Nicolás González, Giuliano Simeone, and Thiago Almada. Meanwhile, Inter Milan's Lautaro Martínez and Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister, both 2022 World champions with Argentina, faced each other at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium. The London club, coming off a 3-0 thrashing of Barcelona, could not overcome the Italian side and dropped to 11th place. Nevertheless, goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli and central defender Leonardo Balerd secured a hard-fought 1-0 win for Olympique Marseille of France against Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium. The midfielder controversially scored from a penalty to give the 'albiceleste' team the victory. The defender came on at the start of the second half, while the goalkeeper was in the lineup from the beginning. Lastly, Olympiacos of Greece, with Argentines Francisco Ortega and Santiago Hezze as starters, and Lorenzo Scipioni on the bench without playing time, narrowly defeated Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan.
