The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed the creation of a new competition, the "Recopa de Campeones" (Champions' Recopa), which will be held in 2026. The tournament will bring together the winners of the Copa Argentina, the Supercopa Argentina, and the Supercopa Internacional. In its inaugural edition, Independiente Rivadavia of Mendoza (champion of the Copa Argentina) and Vélez (champion of the Supercopa Argentina and the Supercopa Internacional) will participate. However, despite Vélez's victory over Estudiantes, the club from Liniers will cede that spot to 'El Pincha'. The main novelty will be the unique point-scoring system. The competition will be a round-robin triangular, with every team playing each other. Each match must have a winner: if the regular time ends in a draw, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout. Due to the absence of draws, points will be awarded on a scale from 0 to 3 as follows: 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win in the penalty shootout, 1 point for a loss in the penalty shootout, and 0 points for a loss in regular time. After the round-robin stage, if there is a tie in points, the champion will be decided according to the following priority order: goal difference, goals scored, fewer goals conceded, and best Fair Play rating. Following the unprecedented league title awarded to Rosario Central this week, the AFA is now adding a new competition for 2026, bringing the total number of official national tournaments to eight.
