The Argentine defender Cristian "Cuti" Romero has gone through a series of injuries that have kept him off the pitch for longer than expected. Initially, an ankle injury and later a thigh tear extended his inactivity to almost three months, despite initial thoughts that he would be absent for only a few weeks.
Romero suffered a ligament injury in the hallux of his right foot during a qualifying match against Paraguay in November 2024. To recover, he had to undergo several surgical interventions. However, recently Tottenham shared a video showing the Argentine defender training with his teammates, marking the final stretch of his recovery.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has announced that Romero could return to official competition in about a week, meaning he could be ready to play in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 against AZ Alkmaar on March 6.
During Romero's absence, Tottenham has played 24 matches across national and international competitions, with a record of 10 wins, 4 draws, and 10 losses. The defender has not participated in a match since December 8, with his last complete appearance in early November against Ipswich Town. With his recovery almost complete, both Tottenham and the Argentine National Team can now breathe a sigh of relief at his imminent return to the pitch.
