Vélez defender, Joaquín García, suffered a severe injury in the match against Tigre during the first match of the 2025 Apertura Tournament of the Professional Football League. The injury occurred at the 29th minute of the first half when he attempted to contest the ball and collided with an opposing player, Nahuel Benegas. At that moment, the Vélez team was already trailing 2-0 to Tigre, with a brace from Ignacio Russo.
The action that caused García's injury happened when Francisco Pizzini tried to play with the ball and the Tigre defender fell to the ground to prevent him from taking it. After the collision, García lay on the ground, displaying signs of intense pain in his right ankle. Both his teammates and the referee immediately called for medical assistance for the 23-year-old footballer.
Images of the incident suggest that García may have suffered a fracture in his right ankle, as there is an observed hyperextension of the foot outward. However, medical examinations will need to be conducted to determine the exact severity of the injury. The recently appointed head coach, Sebastián Domínguez, expressed his sorrow over the incident and emphasized the importance of overcoming the situation and focusing on upcoming challenges, such as the next match against Platense.
"The blow was hard for the team; his immediate substitute fractured his hand yesterday... We have to turn the page and start thinking about Platense," declared Domínguez regarding the difficult situation faced by the Vélez team after García's injury and the loss in the last match.
