Driver Denies Altering License Plate, Fined $250,000

During a vehicle inspection on National Route 205, at kilometer 82 in the province of Buenos Aires, the car's rear license plate was found to be altered: the driver had applied tape to change a letter. A traffic officer began by explaining that the rear license plate had been covered 'with tape.' He crouched by the plate, took a piece of adhesive tape, and asked, 'What is this?' and added, 'I didn't put this there.' In the face of the man's denial, traffic officers explained that the vehicle was in violation, even though the front plate was in optimal condition. 'Someone else put this on, I didn't do it,' the driver concluded. During the operation, carried out at the Uribelarrea toll booth, 1,231 vehicles were inspected and 105 violation reports were issued. However, the man continued to deny, saying, 'No, I didn't put anything on,' so he was asked to exit the vehicle to verify the fact. 'I didn't put anything on, someone else must have done it,' the driver insisted as he opened the car door and then went to the spot indicated by the officials present. A driver denied having taped a letter on his vehicle's rear license plate during a checkpoint in Avellaneda after officers pointed out there was adhesive tape on the plate and now he will have to pay a fine close to $250,000.
