According to a report from Monitor Digital, 65% of the media publications about the president focused on "Criptogate." In just two days, there was a 14% increase in negativity on social media, reaching an average of mentions classified as "terrible." Javier Milei, the president in question, is facing a political and credibility crisis due to the promotion on social media of the cryptocurrency $LIBRA, an unknown and questioned asset by the crypto community.
According to the study, mentions of these assets on social media have increased by 225%, exceeding 300,000 interactions so far in February, while in previous months it didn't even reach 100,000. The sentiment towards cryptocurrencies has also deteriorated considerably, being classified as "very bad" in digital conversations and "bad" in the media, something not seen for a long time. The political cost for both Milei and the crypto sector continues to rise, and uncertainty about the long-term impact of this situation persists.
"Criptogate" has not only damaged Milei's image but has also negatively impacted the general perception of cryptocurrencies. In the first 48 hours following the scandal, it accounted for 60% of the conversation on social media about Milei, relegating other topics to less than 40%. According to the Monitor Digital study, the scandal has intensified negativity in digital conversations and established the word "scam" as the main term used on social media to attack his figure.
Although the controversial message was deleted by the president four hours after its publication, the damage was already done, and uncertainty about the long-term repercussions remains.
