In the Criminal Legislation Commission chaired by Laura Rodríguez Machado, a new draft was worked on that establishes that the criminal trial must continue if the accused does not appear, does not respond, or does not comply with judicial requirements.

One of the highlighted topics is the discussion about the suspension of the PASO at the national level, which is crucial for establishing the electoral calendar and advancing with the necessary preparations.

The government managed to obtain the ruling to suspend the PASO with the support of various deputies, breaking the block of Unión por la Patria. On the other hand, sectors of the opposition consider it important to improve the law, arguing that holding additional elections entails a high cost.

The new legislation provides for the application of the judicial category in serious cases such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and terrorism, where criminal proceedings will not be suspended due to the absence of the accused. This project, which has already obtained ruling in 2024, becomes relevant again in the extraordinary sessions.

Furthermore, other topics related to security and justice will be discussed in the session, where amendments on recidivism, reiteration, consolidation of sentences, and competition of crimes will be debated.
