Extreme Heat Alerts Issued in Argentina

The oppressive heat continues to affect some areas during the second month of 2025. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued new alerts for high temperatures in different districts this Friday. In areas of Corrientes, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Formosa, and Salta, the yellow alert remains in effect, while in several provinces the warning has escalated to orange and even red alert.

The yellow alert indicates a mild to moderate health effect, being dangerous for vulnerable groups such as children, people over 65 years old, or those with chronic illnesses. The orange alert indicates a moderate to high effect, especially dangerous for at-risk groups, whereas the red alert warns of a high to extreme health effect, posing danger to everyone.

The Ministry of Health recommends increasing water intake, avoiding excessive sun exposure, paying special attention to infants, children, and the elderly, and avoiding heavy meals. It is advised to wear lightweight clothing, reduce physical activity, and stay in ventilated spaces. It is important to remember that there is no pharmacological treatment for heatstroke, only preventive measures.

Extreme temperature events are periods in which values are expected that could affect people's health. In Argentina, it has been found that certain temperature thresholds increase morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is crucial to be prepared with an emergency backpack containing basic items like a flashlight, radio, documents, and a phone in case of need.

Additionally, the SMN renewed its alerts for strong winds in some areas of the country. The yellow alert was issued for areas in the southeast of Santa Cruz and all of Tierra del Fuego, where winds of 50 to 65 km/h and gusts of up to 90 km/h are expected. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities, secure objects that could be blown away, and stay informed through the authorities. Strong winds are also expected in the east of Río Negro.
