Pope Leo XIV expressed his firm intention to travel to Argentina next year, in response to journalists in Castel Gandolfo who asked about a possible visit to Latin America.
“Of course. I would be delighted to travel, but the problem is scheduling… I want to go to Mexico — visit the Basilica of Guadalupe —, to Peru, to Uruguay, to Argentina, and so on,” the Pontiff stated verbatim.
The Pope's words, to which the Argentine News Agency had access, spoken during a brief informal encounter upon leaving the summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, immediately had repercussions across the continent.
Leo XIV placed Argentina on the list of countries he wishes to visit after the Jubilee Year 2025 concludes, though he clarified that the final schedule will be made “little by little” starting in 2026.
In the same dialogue with the press, the Holy Father also confirmed his interest in Oceania (“Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands… have been pending for a long time”) and in the Fatima shrine in Portugal.
To date, the Holy See has not announced any official trip to Latin America for 2026. The only confirmed international itinerary for Pope Leo XIV is the upcoming trip to Turkey and Lebanon, from November 27 to December 2, 2025.
