Argentina Moves National Sovereignty Day Holiday

The Argentine government confirmed the move of National Sovereignty Day, creating a four-day long weekend. This decision, in accordance with the law, aims to boost domestic tourism and the national economy.

Argentina Moves National Sovereignty Day Holiday

The national government has confirmed that the holiday for National Sovereignty Day will be moved, creating a four-day long weekend this month.

The holiday, which commemorates the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado on November 20, will be moved from Thursday, November 20, to Monday, November 24. Additionally, Friday, November 21, has been designated as a non-working day for tourism purposes. It is governed like a Sunday rest: if an employee works, they must receive double their usual salary for that day.

Upcoming holidays for 2025 After the long weekend in November, the last immovable holidays of the year will be:

Monday, December 8: Immaculate Conception of Mary. Thursday, December 25: Christmas.

In this way, the rest period will begin on Friday, 21, and extend until Monday, 24, inclusive.

Why the holiday is moved The move of the November 20 holiday is not discretionary, but complies with current regulations. The law states that when the date (November 20) falls on a Thursday, as it does this year, the holiday must be moved to the following Monday. The objective of this measure, combined with the non-working day, is to encourage domestic tourism and benefit the economy of the provinces.

Key difference: Holiday vs. Non-working day It is essential to distinguish the scope of both days for workers, according to the Labor Contract Law:

Friday, 21 (Non-working Day): It is optional for the employer. If service is provided, the payment is ordinary, without a surcharge. Monday, 24 (National Holiday): It is a mandatory day of rest. Attendance at work "is left to the discretion of each employer".
