Central Bank Terminates Contracts with Mint

The Central Bank of Argentina terminated contracts with the Mint due to non-compliance. Processes for printing $1,000 and $2,000 bills halted.

Central Bank Terminates Contracts with Mint

The Central Bank (BCRA) has unilaterally rescinded the contract with the Mint, which means that the entity will stop printing the $1,000 and $2,000 bills. This decision was made at last Friday's board meeting and is based on the high costs charged by the Mint for failing to meet deadlines.

It was specified that contracts covering the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 have been rescinded to supply bills for the first and second halves of 2022, as well as the first six months of last year. However, it was highlighted that the rescission is partial, as the Central Bank will continue to receive a portion of one of the contracts for the production of $2000 bills.

In an internal communication directed to the employees of the Mint, information was provided about the decision made by the BCRA. The communication mentions that all production processes related to the manufacturing of bills will be halted starting at 10:00 PM. Consequently, the personnel directly involved in this productive activity will be urged to take their available vacation periods.

The BCRA has confirmed the rescission of the contract with the Mint, ending the printing of the mentioned bills.
