Argentina Prioritizes OECD Membership Amid Trade Reforms

The Argentine Foreign Minister, Diana Mondino, emphasized the importance of adherence to the OECD as a national priority. Mondino criticized distortions in the agricultural market globally, highlighting tariffs and non-tariff measures that affect the trade of agricultural products. She pointed out that agricultural subsidies promote inefficiency and hinder efforts towards food security.

In her participation in the G20 Trade and Investment Ministers' Meeting in Brasilia, Mondino advocated for the essential role of trade in food security, environmental challenges, and livelihoods, especially in non-subsidizing countries. She defended collaboration and the promotion of investments and trade to empower the G20 and explore ways to foster them, highlighting the importance of private initiative.

Minister Mondino also highlighted the Investment Facilitation Agreement for Development, in which Argentina worked together with other parties for its incorporation into the WTO legal framework. During the meeting, she held bilateral meetings with authorities from the European Union, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Spain.

In the context of the first session on WTO Reform and Strengthening the Multilateral Trading System, Mondino highlighted the role of the G20 in creating consensus in a global environment challenged by protectionism and unilateral measures. Argentina's position focuses on tax reform, an open market economy, the promotion of investments, strengthening the rule of law, free competition, and full integration into the global economy.
