Argentina Explores Alternatives for IMF Agreement

The Minister of Economy of Argentina, Luis Caputo, is in Washington DC to analyze the possible ways to obtain fresh funds, in case a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is not reached under the conditions expected by the country. Caputo highlighted the existence of four alternatives and mentioned the possibility of obtaining resources through multilateral organizations and agreements with banks, totaling USD 8.8 billion.

In a meeting with representatives of the IMF, Caputo detailed that the current Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program expires at the end of the year and two reviews are pending. The Argentine minister, together with the president of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic, met with Gita Gopinath, number 2 of the IMF, before participating in the annual assembly of the organization and in G20 meetings in the United States.

After the meeting with Gopinath, Caputo mentioned positive advances, and it is expected that the Argentine government will continue exploring various alternatives to achieve a new agreement with the IMF, maintaining a constructive tone in the negotiations. In addition, the possibility of resorting to repo agreements, multilateral financing, and pressuring the IMF to lift currency restrictions in the South American country was highlighted.
