Argentina Government Grants Extraordinary Pension Bonus

The national government has granted an Extraordinary Pension Bonus of up to $70,000 for retirees and pensioners who receive up to the minimum pension amount. The payment will be made in March, as published today in the Official Gazette. The benefit was established by Decree 109/2026, signed by President Javier Milei, along with Chief of Staff Manuel Adorni and Minister of Human Capital Sandra Pettovello, and will take effect from February 25. According to the considerations, the bonus has a compensatory nature due to the adverse effects caused by the application of Law No. 27,609 on the Pension Mobility Index on the income of low-income seniors. The benefits must be active in the month in which the settlement is made, and in the case of pensions with co-participants, they will be considered as a single beneficiary. The norm authorizes ANSES to issue clarifying and complementary provisions for its implementation, administration, granting, payment, control, and supervision, including the recovery of undue benefits, while the Chief of Staff must make the corresponding budgetary adjustments. For those who exceed that threshold, the bonus will be the necessary amount to reach the equivalent of the minimum pension plus $70,000. The decree establishes that the bonus is non-remunerative, not subject to discount, and not computable for any other concept. The decree states that this norm, in effect since March 2021, “presented serious and serious inconveniences” by not safeguarding against inflationary risk. The measure affects three groups of beneficiaries under the National Social Security Administration (ANSES): holders of contributory pension benefits granted under Law No. 24,241 and previous regimes whose mobility is governed by article 32; beneficiaries of the Universal Pension for the Elderly (PUAM) created by Law No. 27,260; and holders of non-contributory pensions for old age, disability, mothers of seven or more children and other pensions by grace. According to what the Argentine News Agency could find out, the maximum amount of $70,000 corresponds to those who perceive, for the sum of all their active benefits, an amount less than or equal to the minimum guaranteed pension established by article 125 of Law No. 24,241.
