Argentina Reduces Export Taxes Amid Surplus

Argentina's government has announced a temporary reduction in export taxes on agricultural goods. This move aims to encourage economic growth without jeopardizing the current trade surplus, providing relief for farmers faced with economic challenges.

The Government announced the reduction of export taxes on agricultural products in order to encourage the liquidation of grains and increase reserves. According to decree 38/2025 published in the Official Bulletin, the new tax rates will come into effect today and will affect products such as soybeans in bulk, their derivatives, wheat, sorghum, corn, sunflower, and regional economies. To benefit from this, it is required to liquidate 95% of the foreign exchange from the goods.

At a press conference, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni and Minister of Economy Luis 'Toto' Caputo confirmed the measure, highlighting the efforts of Argentines that allowed for the consolidation of a financial surplus. Caputo emphasized that the intention is to lower taxes without compromising the surplus and that these actions support the president's promises.

The reductions in taxes include lowering the soybean rate from 33% to 26%, wheat from 12% to 9.5%, and sunflower from 7% to 5.5%. In addition, export taxes on regional economies, such as sugar, cotton, cattle leather, tobacco, forest industry, and rice, which generated over 1.1 billion dollars in exports in 2024, will be eliminated.

The measure aims to allow producers to plan for the long term and achieve stability in their projections. The fiscal cost of the measure is expected to reach approximately 800 million dollars, equivalent to 0.13% of Gross Domestic Product, according to expert estimates. The deadlines for liquidating currency will be reduced to 15 business days instead of the usual 30, under the supervision of the Revenue and Customs Control Agency (ARCA) and the Central Bank.

Caputo called for concentrating tax claims at the provincial and municipal levels to avoid compromising the efforts of all Argentines and highlighted the importance of solidarity with the agricultural sector in a challenging context, such as the drought, thereby showing concrete support for producers.
