Solidarity and Self-management in Zárate

An autonomous space called La Guardilla, located in the Zárate neighborhood of Buenos Aires province, has managed to establish itself and offer solidarity activities for the community. Started in 2022, this place functions as an autonomous snack house that provides educational support, snacks, recreational workshops, gardening workshops, and food supplements throughout the week.

The operation of La Guardilla is based on solidarity and grassroots organization, where the necessary supplies are obtained thanks to the collaboration of local neighbors, some friendly shops, and other self-managed spaces in the area. In addition, they have the support of various friendly circles in the suburbs and the capital, which offer their cooperation when needed.

Throughout the year, around five monthly activities are carried out, along with weekly food supplements and the distribution of tools, books, and clothing according to the season. La Guardilla stands out as a self-managed space that has no relationship with municipal institutions, political parties, or social movements, due to the perception that they have contributed to the situation in which they currently find themselves.

The space hosts a varied list of activities throughout the year, from traditional festivities like Labor Day to clay construction workshops. With the constant participation of 60 to 80 children in the activities, La Guardilla has become an important meeting point for the Zárate neighborhood community.

In an effort to continue expanding its community work, La Guardilla has organized numerous solidarity and cultural activities, involving neighbors and collaborating spaces to achieve a positive impact in the community. Through its commitment to self-management and solidarity, this space has established itself as a reference for those seeking to promote positive change in the local and regional reality.
