The first explorations in the Vicuña project deposits, which include the Josemaría and Filo del Sol deposits in the Iglesia department, have revealed one of the most important reserves of gold, silver, and copper in the world, marking a milestone for Argentine and global mining. According to the official report from the company, this discovery is considered the most significant in the last three decades.
This strategic alliance focuses on the development of the emerging Vicuña mining district, aiming to consolidate a world-class production of copper, gold, and silver. The geographic proximity between the Filo del Sol and Josemaría deposits is a key strategic factor, as it will allow cost optimization through economies of scale, shared use of critical infrastructure, and facilitation of future expansions.
This development is expected to translate into millions in investments for Argentina, consolidating a mining complex of global impact. "Filo del Sol and the Vicuña district are ready to become a world-class deposit that will support a globally renowned mining complex."
The Vicuña project is managed by Vicuña Corp., a joint venture in which Lundin Mining and BHP participate equally (50/50). The mineralization detected beyond the previously identified boundaries suggests even greater potential for the site. "The initial mineral resource has highlighted the potential of one of the highest-grade undeveloped open-pit copper projects in the world and one of the largest gold and silver resources globally," added Jack Lundin.
The executive congratulated the Filo team "for this remarkable discovery and for bringing the deposit to its current location." Mining specialized media have highlighted the exceptional quality and volume of the extracted cores, positioning this Argentine deposit above other comparable international projects. He also stated that this advance "marks a turning point in the projection of Lundin Mining as a key player in global copper, gold, and silver production."
Regarding silver, it is estimated at 659 million ounces, plus another 808 million inferred. Copper presents equally notable figures, with 13 million tons identified and an additional inferred potential of 25 million tons.
Jack Lundin, President and CEO of Lundin Mining, described the discovery as a turning point. Preliminary estimates are of exceptional magnitude: a potential extraction of 32 million ounces of gold is projected, with an additional inferred potential of 49 million ounces.
