Attorney demands acquittal for sect leader in Argentina

San Carlos de Bariloche, February 11 (NA) -- Attorney Carlos Broitman requested this Wednesday the dismissal and acquittal of his client, Russian Konstantin Rudnev, accused of leading a sect in this city, although the justice rejected the petition. In fact, Federal Judge Gustavo Villanueva considered that the prosecution still has time to continue investigating and to find new evidence for the case. In this sense, the magistrate explained that Broitman could present his request only from April 4, the date scheduled for the prosecution to provide the necessary evidence that would lead Rudnev to a trial. According to Broitman, his request is based on the health problems of the Russian citizen, who was arrested last year while trying to travel to Brazil, and remains lodged in the Rawson prison, awaiting a resolution in the case in which he is the main accused. Rudnev would have lost about 50 kilos, and for that reason his lawyer had also requested house arrest, but it was denied, since prosecutor Fernando Arrigo considered it necessary for him to remain in a maximum security prison. Broitman's presentation, as learned by the Noticias Argentinas agency, came amid his recent complaint of having been the victim of intimidation and stalking at his home located in the 'El Venado' country in the Buenos Aires Aires party of Canning. The lawyer filed a preventive habeas corpus after a confusing episode that occurred in the guard of the private neighborhood: there, according to Broitman's statements, a man pretended to be an employee of the Mercado Libre company to confirm his identity and if he resided there. Rudnev, for his part, is accused of leading a sect with alleged victims in Bariloche, within the framework of an investigation that includes crimes related to human trafficking and reduction to servitude.
