In our country, May 8 is commemorated as the Day of Struggle Against Institutional Violence, a date that recalls the serious violations of human rights by security forces. On this day, we pay tribute to all victims of institutional violence and promote slogans such as "Kids are not dangerous, they are in danger" and "prisons are for genocides, not for children, no to lowering the age of criminal responsibility."
On this occasion, in Rosario, the Institutional Violence Coordination Table calls for a gathering in Plaza 25 de Mayo this Thursday at 5 PM alongside the Mothers' Round. This meeting aims to remember the victims of institutional violence and promote public security policies that respect human rights.
Fernando, a member of the Table and relative of Brandon Romero, who was murdered in July 2020, mentioned that the Table arises from the coordination between families of victims and human rights organizations, with the goal of addressing institutional violence and weaving networks to demand justice and an end to repression.
During the day, a document will be read, discussions will be held, and family members of victims of institutional violence will share their testimonies. This date remembers the "Budge Massacre" that occurred on May 8, 1987, when the Buenos Aires police shot three young people in Ingeniero Budge, Lomas de Zamora.
The law establishes that educational institutions must include this date in their school calendar, promoting a democratic conception of security based on respect for human rights and the protection of the most vulnerable groups in society. Despite this legislation, the Table continues to demand an end to institutional violence and rejects proposals such as lowering the age of criminal responsibility.
