A teenager from the city of Recreo, in Santa Fe, died of hantavirus, according to the provincial Ministry of Health. The young man presented symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain on February 5 and was admitted to intensive care at the "Dr. Orlando Assia" Children's Hospital in the provincial capital, where he ultimately died due to acute respiratory renal failure on Tuesday.
Samples sent to the Central Laboratory tested positive for hantavirus. Health authorities are evaluating the teenager's family, who have not shown symptoms so far, providing warning guidelines for prompt medical consultation, and collaborating with experts in assessing the environmental situation along with Zoonosis and the Health Region.
Hantavirus is characterized by high fever, muscle aches, cough, and headache. As the infection progresses, severe respiratory problems develop, making it vital to seek medical attention as soon as the first symptoms appear. Although in some cases patients may improve quickly, experts warn that the disease can worsen and cause respiratory complications.
To prevent hantavirus infection, it is recommended to avoid the presence of rodents in homes, seal possible entry points, maintain hygiene with a solution of sodium hypochlorite and water, keep gardens and firewood away from homes, trim vegetation around the house, and properly ventilate spaces before entering, especially in rural or wild areas.
Additionally, it is essential to contact local authorities for pest control and conduct constant health monitoring in case a hantavirus case is confirmed to ensure early medical attention if necessary.
