Neuquén Airport in Argentina has been equipped with a new Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS). This technology improves weather predictability, helping to reduce flight diversions and cancellations, thereby enhancing safety and air connectivity in the region.

The International Airport President Perón in the city of Neuquén, Argentina, has a new Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS), installed and put into service by the Argentine Air Navigation Company.

The implementation of this new technology brings significant improvements to the predictability of air operations in the region, allowing for the reduction of diversions and flight cancellations due to weather issues, according to the company to the Argentine News Agency.

An AWOS system is composed of multiple sensors that record, continuously and in real-time, precise data on meteorological and visibility conditions at strategic points on the airport runway.

These measurements include visual range, cloud base height, precipitation level, wind direction and speed, as well as temperature, atmospheric pressure, and other relevant data.

This information is of utmost importance for aircraft crews, as it provides a precise and accurate picture of the visibility they will have at the moment of landing, along with the other meteorological variables present at the time.

Likewise, each AWOS has an additional sensor that records the wind condition at the opposite end of the runway used for instrument landings, thereby providing a comprehensive set of data that enables better decision-making by both air traffic control personnel and the airlines operating at the Neuquén airport.

The commissioning of this new Automatic Weather Observation System at the airport in the city of Neuquén, with its technology, strengthens operational safety and greater service availability, with a clear benefit for the air connectivity of the entire region.
