Man Dies After Kayaking Accident in Argentina

Buenos Aires, February 16 (NA) -- A man from the coastal city of Mar del Plata died after failing to get out of the water after his kayak capsized while he was circulating off the coast of Santa Clara del Mar. According to local media reports accessed by the Argentine News Agency, the victim was identified as Mauricio Ríos, 47 years old, while the episode was recorded around 7:30 a.m. last Saturday on Route 11 and Rapallo, at the height of the Santa Elena neighborhood. Civil Defense personnel, lifeguards, and the Community Police arrived at the scene after authorities were alerted to what happened, and the officers intervened to assist Ríos, although his death was ultimately confirmed. It was indicated that the victim was sailing with another man who entered the sea first, but at one point lost sight of Ríos, so he returned to look for him, found him in the water, and gave notice for him to receive assistance. Meanwhile, it was learned that two people performed CPR maneuvers at the scene until the arrival of the Santa Clara del Mar Volunteer Firefighters and an ambulance, whose medical staff immediately assisted Ríos, but despite the efforts made for several minutes, the man died. The case is in the hands of prosecutor Diego Benedetti, head of the Mar Chiquita Decentralized Prosecutor's Office, who ordered the first proceedings to determine the circumstances in which the event occurred.
