After a scorching day, a strong storm hit Mar del Plata this afternoon, with heavy rain and wind gusts causing some damage across the city. The day had begun under a full sun, but conditions changed abruptly around 4 p.m. when gusts of up to 70 km/h began, forcing tourists to quickly leave the beach. The wind tore off roofs, light posts, and hundreds of beach umbrellas. Likewise, trees fell in the central area, partially disrupting traffic and the electricity supply, according to Noticias Argentinas agency. Meanwhile, in La Perla, north of the city, strong gusts caused the windows on the ground floor of one of the neighborhood's most emblematic buildings to shatter, causing minor injuries to a security guard, who is out of danger. For this reason, Civil Defense personnel intervened and set up a special operation at the tower's entrance, in case other upper-floor windows might fall. Furthermore, for this Sunday, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) announced drizzles in the early morning and a cloudy day in Mar del Plata, with a low of 14 degrees and a high of 20.
