Lanús' team suffered a 2-0 defeat against Deportivo Riestra in the inaugural match of the 2025 Apertura Tournament of the Professional Football League. The match took place at the Néstor Díaz Pérez Stadium. The goals for Deportivo Riestra were scored by Jonathan Herrera, in the 31st minute of the second half, and Gabriel Obredor, in the 41st minute of the same period.
In Mauricio Pellegrino's debut as head coach of Lanús, the southern provincial team failed to showcase their best game and did not earn three points at home against a rival who hadn't won away in fifteen matches. Lanús' next match will be at home against Rosario Central, after the latter defeated Godoy Cruz 3-0 in Mendoza, next Tuesday at 7:15 PM.
On the other hand, Deportivo Riestra achieved a significant victory that boosts their confidence ahead of the upcoming match against San Martín de San Juan, scheduled for Tuesday, January 28 at 5:00 PM Argentine time. During the match, Lanús had a clear goal-scoring opportunity in the 13th minute of the first half due to a mistake by defender Carlos Izquierdoz, but Ezequiel Muñoz managed to clear the ball off the line to save his team.
Despite Lanús' improvement during the game and their dangerous goal attempts, Ignacio Arce, the visiting goalkeeper, stood out by keeping the score level with important interventions. In the second half, Deportivo Riestra was more effective in front of goal, managing to break through Lanús' defense on two occasions.
First, Jonathan Herrera scored with a header in the 31st minute of the second half, and then Gabriel Obredor capitalized on a poor clearance from Luciano Boggio to score with a powerful shot in the 41st minute of the second period.
