Crisis in Buenos Aires Peronism due to the Thirds Plan

The crisis in Buenos Aires Peronism intensifies after Kicillof's 'thirds plan,' which demands equitable representation in the provincial Senate. Mayors challenge his leadership as internal tensions rise before the elections.

Crisis in Buenos Aires Peronism due to the Thirds Plan

In Buenos Aires politics, the "thirds plan" proposed by Kicillof to balance the top three positions among Peronist factions has generated an unprecedented crisis in the coalition. In 2021, the privileged seats were occupied by Walter Torchio, Malena Defunchio, and Juanci Martínez. The UCR, governing in five municipalities, is debating whether to ally with Kicillof or Massa. Meanwhile, the PRO, with key districts like Junín, is preparing to capitalize on fractures within Peronism.

In this context, the mayors of the Movement for the Right to the Future (MDF), pillars of regional kicillofismo, are demanding their fair share of power. Mayors like Germán Lago (Alberti), Luis Pugnaloni (Hipólito Yrigoyen), and Carlos Ferraris (Leandro Alem), along with other officials, have joined together to demand a fair distribution of power, asserting the need to balance forces. Meanwhile, Massa's faction is trying to regain influence after the departure of one of its leaders in 2023.

In the Fourth Section, electoral pressure is mounting as time goes on. With the support of three mayors and the strong pressure from Alexis Guerrera, president of the Chamber of Deputies, they are preparing to challenge La Cámpora, which currently has only Pablo Zurro as a local representative. In this scenario, the UCR and the PRO are watching closely, wondering if a truce can be achieved before the midterm elections or if the crisis will worsen.

In a recent unexpected turn, the Peronist mayors of the Fourth Electoral Section, allies of Kicillof, have firmly warned that one of their representatives must occupy one of the top three positions on the provincial Senate list. This challenge puts the governor between a rock and a hard place, as the mayors press him. With the Senate positions in the hands of prominent figures like Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Sergio Massa, a mayor from the region has indicated that failing to secure a spot in the "Top 3" would be unsustainable.

These internal tensions in Unidad Provincia reflect a critical crossroads, as they must retain seven seats, and losing the three most influential ones would mean a significant setback against Kirchnerism. The future of Peronism in Buenos Aires is at stake amid this crisis, which threatens to deepen if an agreement is not reached before the elections.
