Wichí women resist land grab in Salta province

The Misión Chaque community discovered that businessman Claudio Ferrari had set up an illegal camp in the mountains, where workers slept on cardboard boxes covered with plastic. In January, workers sent by Ferrari began to clear paths, cut down trees, and install posts to fence off the area. The reaction was immediate: dozens of Wichí women organized and decided to cut off the road to defend their ancestral territory. 'They are not taking our complaint and now they want us to go, but escorted by the police,' the community denounced. Lawyer Juan Carlos Vega pointed to a 'clear collusion between the usurpation and sectors of the judicial power.' Lawyer Juan Carlos Vega pointed to a 'clear collusion between the usurpation and sectors of the judicial power.' In March of last year, Ferrari entered the territory again, and the police demanded that they lift the blockade. 'We gathered in assembly, mostly women, and decided to block the road to prevent them from entering and to take care of the mountain,' stated Marta Herrera. The community responded with a permanent camp. Ferrari, according to them, never presented clear title to the land. 'We are worried about what is coming for the future generations,' a community leader warned. This land grab is not an isolated case: it is part of a broader offensive against indigenous peoples and the commons in the country. At the same time, the national government is advancing with a project from President Milei to reform the Glaciers Law, which would open the door to large-scale mining in protected periglacial areas and put strategic water reserves at risk.
