A specialist from Conicet warned about the proliferation of cyanobacteria in the Uruguay River basin and the direct influence of human activity on this phenomenon. These bacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, produce harmful toxins for both wildlife and people who come into contact with contaminated waters.
Eduardo Echepare, a biologist and researcher at Conicet, detailed that the green coloration in the waters of Entre RĂos is due to the explosion of cyanobacteria, which usually occurs between February and April. According to the expert, factors such as climate change and the presence of the Salto Grande dam in Concordia alter the hydrological cycle of the river, contributing to the excessive growth of these bacteria.
In addition to the capybaras dyed green, it is noted that contact with waters contaminated by cyanobacteria can cause symptoms such as gastroenteritis, vomiting, diarrhea, otitis, and irritations. Echepare warns that in more severe cases, prolonged exposure or consumption of contaminated water can trigger liver and neurological damage.
The biologist emphasizes that the discharge of untreated sewage, the use of fertilizers rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, as well as the destruction of natural wetlands, create a favorable environment for the multiplication of cyanobacteria. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions in recreational activities and monitor water for human consumption in order to prevent potential health risks.
