Buenos Aires, April 9 (NA) — Argentine tennis player Tomás Etcheverry will face Spain's world number one Carlos Alcaraz this Thursday with the aim of pulling off a major upset in the Monte Carlo Masters' round of 16. The match, to be held on Court Rainier III, is scheduled for before 9:20 AM. Etcheverry reached this stage after his strong victories over the always challenging Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Frenchman Térence Atmane, both in three sets. The Argentine had a great start to 2026, winning his first title by triumphing at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, and is getting closer to matching and even surpassing his best ATP ranking, which was number 27. Alcaraz, for his part, debuted in the second round, where he had no trouble defeating fellow Argentine Sebastián Báez on Tuesday morning. The Spaniard, who completed the career Grand Slam this year by winning the Australian Open, comes off a poor North American season, as he was unable to compete at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters, putting his status as world number one in serious jeopardy. According to the Argentine News Agency, this will be their first ATP-level encounter.
