Riquelme to request 4,000 Boca fans for Superclásico against River

Boca Juniors president Juan Román Riquelme will request permission for 4,000 fans to attend the Monumental stadium for the Superclásico against River Plate. This move aims to bring back away fans to one of Argentina's biggest football rivalries. The last time Boca fans visited the Monumental was in 2012. If successful, it could lead to a reciprocal arrangement for River fans.

Riquelme to request 4,000 Boca fans for Superclásico against River

The president of Boca Juniors, Juan Román Riquelme, will request that 4,000 Boca fans be allowed to attend the Monumental stadium for the upcoming Superclásico against River Plate. This move aims to reinstate the presence of away fans in one of the most attended football matches in Argentina. According to the Argentine News Agency, the initiative is for the match that the 'Millionaire' and 'Xeneize' will play on Sunday, April 19th, in Núñez for a new date of the Apertura Tournament. It also considers that if this is successful, a reciprocal logic can be advanced so that 'Banda' fans can have their place when the match is played at La Bombonera. The last Superclásico at the Monumental with away fans was on October 28, 2012, for the 12th round of the Inicial Tournament, and ended 2-2: River had gone 2-0 with goals from Leonardo Ponzio and Rodrigo Mora, but Boca tied it with goals from Santiago Silva, from a penalty, and Walter Erviti at the end. That match was the last River-Boca in Núñez with the presence of Xeneize fans, because the following year the prohibition of away fans began to consolidate in Argentine football. Meanwhile, the last Superclásico at La Bombonera with away fans was on May 5, 2013, for the 12th round of the Final Tournament, when Boca and River drew 1-1 with goals from Santiago Silva and Manuel Lanzini. From June of that year, after the death of Lanús fan Javier Gere in the preview of a match against Estudiantes, the prohibition of away fans in Argentine football was deepened, and since then, the clash between the two has been played, with rare exceptions, only with local fans. The intention of the Boca president appears in a context where the gradual return of away fans has been reinstated in some matches, and also finds an immediate precedent in the Copa Libertadores: this Thursday it was confirmed that Boca can take 2,000 fans to Chile for the debut on Tuesday, April 7, against Universidad Católica at the Claro Arena. The authorization for that match was communicated by the presidential delegate of the Metropolitan Region, Germán Codina, who clarified that the entry of Boca fans will be subject to a series of security requirements by Cruzados, including the reinforcement of the operation and the correct segregation between both groups of fans. With this scenario, at Boca they understand that the international experience can become a support to open the discussion also on a local level. For now there is no official confirmation about the presence of away fans in the Superclásico, but Riquelme's intention is already emerging as an agenda item with just over two weeks to go before the clash with River.
