On International Women's Day, María Sol Méndez made history by winning the election to become the first female president in the history of Deportivo Español, a club that competes in Primera C, the fourth tier of Argentine football. According to the Argentine News Agency, Méndez led the opposition list 'Español Renace' and won with 57% of the vote against the ruling party's list 'Español de Primera', in an election that saw 262 votes cast. Thus, on International Women's Day, Méndez became the seventh woman to lead a club in the history of Argentine football. A historic day for Argentine football saw political leader María Sol Méndez win the election to take the helm at Deportivo Español. The former official of Juntos por el Cambio, who served as a legislator for the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, secured 154 of the 262 votes counted on Sunday to defeat the incumbent leadership and begin a new era for 'El Gallego'. Before running for president, Méndez had played a historic role in passing the Historical Reparation Law for a piece of land the club owns in CABA, which the City Government intended to use to expand the Higher Institute of Public Safety. However, with this law, signed on November 27 of last year, the club obtained a 'precarious title' for 20 years to recover that part of its property in the Bajo Flores neighborhood. 'This will allow Español to be reborn, without a doubt,' she had declared as the legislator who is today confirmed as the future president of Deportivo Español. In this way, Méndez joins a short but historic list of female presidents in Argentine football.
