Buenos Aires, March 3 (NA) – The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has reportedly decided to maintain the strike despite differing opinions, and the ninth matchday of the Apertura Tournament, along with other categories, will be officially suspended, according to sources within the leadership.
Starting at noon, the main AFA executives will meet at the Ezeiza facility to define the next steps, although the decision is said to have already been made: no football.
In this meeting between the 30 First Division executives, it will be resolved on which weekday the matchday affected by the strike will be rescheduled, as learned by the Argentine News Agency. The AFA has already notified the club presidents of the three possible alternatives to recover matchday 9: the options are March 18, April 22, or May 13. Each institution must express its preference to advance in the definition of the new schedule.
Why the executives are meeting The 30 representatives of the clubs of the Professional League will meet this afternoon to decide whether to lift or not the strike scheduled for matchday 9 of the 2026 Apertura Tournament.
According to the Argentine News Agency, this decision was taken at the initiative of President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia because the Justice summoned the AFA authorities, including Tapia and Toviggino, to give a statement in a case for alleged fiscal irregularities.
From Argentina's main football body, they emphasized that there is no enforceable debt and that the questioned payments were made voluntarily before their respective due dates.
Additionally, they clarified that this argument has already been presented to the Justice and is currently awaiting resolution from the Chamber of Appeals. They also accused ARCA of attempting to transform non-due obligations into the basis of a supposed tax crime.
