Argentine Government Stays Silent on Football Suspension Over Tax Probe

The Argentine government has declined to comment on the decision by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to halt football in response to a judicial order to summon its authorities for questioning in an investigation into alleged tax irregularities. Government officials stated that this is an internal matter for the AFA and that the judiciary must act independently. They believe the conflict is not on the agenda of President Javier Milei's administration, which is currently focused on advancing its parliamentary agenda. Meanwhile, the AFA has stated that there is no enforceable debt related to the obligations in the complaint, and that the payments in question were made voluntarily before their due date. The association also criticized the tax agency ARCA, accusing it of attempting to turn non-matured obligations into the basis for a criminal tax offense, a stance it deems contrary to current regulations. In parallel, the institution announced that during a meeting of the Professional League's Executive Committee, its leaders unanimously decided to request the suspension of matchday 9 of the tournament, scheduled for March 5-8.
