Argentine tennis player Juan Manuel Cerúndolo advanced to the quarterfinals of the Río Open 2026 by defeating German Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4. The 24-year-old Argentine, ranked 78th in the ATP rankings, had previously eliminated the second-seeded Luciano Darderi in the previous round. Champion in Córdoba in 2021 when he was world No. 335 and came from the qualifiers, Cerúndolo is experiencing one of the best moments of his career. He will now face Czech player Vit Kopriva, who earlier eliminated Román Burruchaga from the tournament. There is also a possibility of a historic showdown between the Cerúndolo brothers if both advance, as already happened in Córdoba 2023.
