CONMEBOL Announces New Team Rankings

Buenos Aires, Dec 15 (NA) – CONMEBOL announced on Tuesday the team rankings to be used for the 2026 season, which will determine the pots for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, with several changes at the top of the table.

The highlight was that River Plate fell from the top of the classification to third place, leaving Palmeiras as the leader and Flamengo as runner-up after the final between them, which ended with the victory of 'Mengao'.

Meanwhile, Boca's absence in the last edition of the continent's most important tournament caused it to drop one more position and place it in fourth place.

Even so, both Argentine teams will be seeded in the different international competitions.

However, Racing received great news as it entered the prestigious top 10 of the list. 'La Academia' rose from the twelfth to the ninth place after reaching the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, where they were eliminated by Flamengo, and winning the 2024 Sudamericana.

Meanwhile, Estudiantes de La Plata, the recent Clausura champion, was ranked 18th, while Lanus, the Sudamericana winner, reached the 21st spot and Vélez was placed in the 26th.

In this way, there are six Argentine representatives within the top 30 of the ranking published by South American football's governing body.

Meanwhile, there are twelve Brazilian teams within said list, showing a clear superiority, as the Argentine News Agency was able to find out.

Finally, the criterion for determining the positions in the list is determined by three aspects: performance in international competitions in the last 10 years, historical importance in those tournaments, and additional recognition for having become champions of their respective leagues.
