Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) has projected a future rivalry with Argentine Franco Colapinto (Alpine) in Formula 1, stating it could reach the intensity of a “Pelé-Maradona war,” though he clarified it would always remain within a framework of respect.

According to information from Motorsport reported by Noticias Argentinas, the 21-year-old Brazilian valued the Argentine driver's continuity at the Alpine team for 2026 and highlighted his ability to pressure his teammate, Frenchman Pierre Gasly.

The Sauber driver told Motorsport that the historic sporting tension between Argentina and Brazil could transfer to F1 if both were to fight for a world title.

The Brazilian noted that he has known Colapinto since childhood and that their relationship is built on a bond of respect forged in karting. He explained that he prefers to race against someone familiar rather than an unknown rival.

Bortoleto praised Colapinto's progress in his first year in the category and said Colapinto justified his contract renewal at Alpine, also highlighting the way he pressured Gasly during different stages of the championship.

The F2 champion highlighted his natural talent and celebrated that both represent South America in the top category.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, his recognition circulated strongly in the paddock.

Bortoleto considered that a direct championship dispute could revive the historic tension between the two countries, though he reiterated that their personal relationship avoids any conflict.

Colapinto stated that Brazil holds a special place in his career and emphasized that motorsport does not replicate the rivalry of football.

F1 will resume activity next week in Las Vegas, before the season finale in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
