Three people were detained, two of them on Libertador and Roosevelt Avenue, and the third at the intersection with Monroe. These individuals were arrested for throwing stones at the buses transporting fans of Atlético Mineiro, who were heading to the Monumental stadium for the semifinal match of the Copa Libertadores.
As a result of these incidents, the City Police had to reinforce the security operation to receive the rest of the Atlético Mineiro fans, who had gathered in Puerto Madero before traveling together. Additionally, the squad that was staying at the Marriott hotel, located on 9 de Julio Avenue, was involved.
In the hotel, a discussion occurred between the security officials of the Brazilian team, their executives, and the City Police officers. A barricade was even set up to prevent the bus from leaving the hotel towards the Monumental. Finally, with a delay of about 15 minutes, the convoy departed for the stadium after the president of Atlético Mineiro, Sergio Coelho, descended to the pavement to request the officers allow them to leave.
During the transfer, the buses were stopped again later, at San Martín square. In this context, Coelho expressed: "Without security, there is no match." These events occurred before the game between River Plate and Atlético Mineiro for the Copa Libertadores and caused some confusion in the area. The chaotic circumstances added to acts of violence in traffic, with flares and firecrackers being thrown from moving vehicles.
The heightened passion of fans in decisive moments often leads to violent actions, as evidenced by the events recorded before this important sporting match.
