Argentine Government Advisor Questions Urgency of Contest Reform

Buenos Aires, April 9 (NA) – Advisor Santiago Viola, representing the Executive Branch, questioned the urgency of reforming the contest regulations today and stated that the Council of Magistracy must lead any changes to the system.

“I believe no one is better suited than the counselors to modify the Council's regulations,” affirmed Viola during the joint commission meeting, where different proposals are being analyzed, including the one pushed by the Supreme Court.

The official warned that he observes “an unwarranted anxiety in the urgent vote” which, in his opinion, does not align with the body's needs, which “has been working well and submitting the maximum number of shortlists to fill vacancies,” as Argentina News Agency was able to learn.

In this sense, he emphasized that he does not identify a structural problem in the current functioning and defended the performance of the magistrates: “There is a large number of judges who perform their function correctly and have the competence.”

Rosatti participated unexpectedly in the Council of Magistrature and called for consensus on changes.

Viola also valued the candidates sent by the Executive Branch to the Senate and considered that, although there are aspects to improve, the analysis must be in-depth and consensual among the counselors.

Furthermore, he downplayed the scope of the highest court's proposal by stating that he interprets it as “a contribution and a piece of advice,” more than as a formal project within the Council.

“I don't know why there is such great anxiety, we have to analyze it among all,” insisted the counselor, who emphasized that it was the members of the body themselves who detected aspects to modify in the regulations.

The ruling party representative concluded that they will evaluate which elements of the different initiatives can be incorporated into “a better project,” within the framework of the Council's internal work.
